Some general tips:
It is an artificial situation.
You need to know how to play the game.
It is NOT an exam of knowledge only.
It is an application to be a member of the exclusive “ Consultant T&O” club.
You have to conduct yourself in an appropriate manner
ie. Day 1 Consultant in a DGH:
Smart,
Articulate,
Confident,
Appropriate appearance ( half sleeves).
Examiners are NOT trying to fail you.
What to expect:
Common things are common.
Prepare common stuff well
ie. know everything about carpal tunnel before reading up Morquio’s.
Know and understand the basics of everything you do in orthopaedics
(higher order thinking, NOT rote learning).
Bedside manner:
Vitally important, you could pass or fail on account of your bedside manner.
Examiners are given a marking descriptor, on the basis of which candidates are marked ( you will get a copy of this sheet before viva). This marking sheet has 4 domains and 1 of them is bedside manner ( the other domains are: overall professional capability, knowledge and judgement, quality of response).
Always introduce yourself.
Ask permission to examine the patient and to ask questions.
Make sure you don’t hurt the patient.
Smile/ do whatever it takes to build a rapport with the patient.
Don’t forget to use the alcohol gel.
Marking scheme:
There are always two examiners and each one marks the candidate from 4-8.
4- poor fail
5-fail
6-pass
7-good pass
8-strong pass
Pass mark is 576 out of a total of 960.
You don't have to pass each section, as long as the total score is 576 you pass.
Beware, there is no scope for deliberation. Many candidates have failed with a score of 575.
