FRCS orth exam preparation
some tips and tricks
Exam resources
Core textbooks:
No single textbook is comprehensive and there is no book that is compulsory reading for this exam. Although it is conventional to read Miller I never liked it because of the presentation. However, the latest edition is quite readable. Whichever book you read you are probably better off making one book as your core reading book and collect all other material around this book. This way revision becomes easier.
I found the AAOS comprehensive review very readable and made it my core textbook. I made a lot of etra notes and inserted it inside the AAOS book. Before the exams the width of my AAOS review was double the original width!
My core textbooks were:
AAOS comprehensive orthopaedic review
Ramachandran for basic science
Core Orthopaedic knowledge: for trauma
I also extensively used the Current Orthopaedics ( now renamed Orthopaedics and trauma) journal especially for Paediatrics and foot and ankle
Reference books: I also flicked through
Apley
Oxford textbook of T&O
Miller
Rockwood
Campbell’s
JBJS instructional review, current concepts
I also found the Exam corner section in JBJS Br very useful for revision.
Revision stage: at revision stage I used the postgrad orthopaedics series of books, they started off with one book but now also have a MCQ/EMQ and a viva revision book. All are well worth reading.
Postgrad orthopaedics series
MCQ/EMQ
Viva
MCQ/ EMQ:
I used the orthobullet website to practice MCQ. However, one has to remember that the British exam is much different. For example there are no images in the British exams.
I also found the following apps useful for revision:
OITE buzzword
OITE tumor
AO surgery reference (excellent to revise surgical approaches)
Courses:there are many courses, not all are worthwhile, however, it is much better to go to too many courses and pass in the first attempt than to go to too few and fail
I went to the following courses and recommend them all
Anatomy: Oswestry
Basic Science: Cambridge
Paediatrics: Stanmore
Hands: Nottingham
Spine: Cardiff
Viva: Cardiff, RCSEng
Clinicals:
Lower limb: Wrightington
Upper limb: Wrightington
Clinical and revision: Oxford and Oswestry
all courses are highly sought after and places fill up quickly, keep on the lookout and apply early
